Students are best prepared to begin third grade when they are fluent in both subtraction and addition, and can add and subtract double digits. They should come to third grade with a solid understanding of telling time and basic money concepts, and have a strong foundation of place value up to the thousands. Students should also understand rounding to the nearest tens.

Students will continue to work on their fluency skills in the third grade. Students will first demonstrate mastery of solving 100 subtraction problems within a five minute timeframe and then move on to mastery of solving 100 multiplication problems within five minutes. Fluency is SO incredibly important, and any time you can spend helping your student practice is time well spent, indeed!
